Stumbled upon Cultivate 2011 when I came across Kem Meyer’s tweet. I met her when she visited UBC a couple of weeks ago and was taken by her thoughts on church communications. I was a bit curious with the #cultivate11 hashtag. Thank God I clicked on the link because it led me to a world I only dreamed about.

STYLE – Young Adult Ministry
Just wanted to give you guys quick snapshots of one of the ministries I serve in. It’s my home church’s (University Baptist Church) young adult ministry we fondly call STYLE. It’s for college students and 20-somethings “devoted to Christ and committed to living out the Gospel in our city, through our lives.”
I got involved with it around 4 years ago when I volunteered to do media for Mosaic. Through the years and various name changes, it evolved into STYLE. I take care of the social media stuff (i.e. tweeting, status updates, announcement and just recently, blogging). I help with the set-up and occasionally do media when I’m asked.
Back to Basics
Last week I attended a church in Queens, New York since my mom’s friend goes there. We stayed at her place during our 4-day NYC visit. I was actually looking forward to going to Redeemer Church after reading “The Reason for God” by Timothy Keller. I think that plan didn’t push through because God wanted to show me something through this church.
The church doesn’t have a set, no flashing lights, projected gobos or moving heads. There was no video or ProPresenter for that matter. The slides were from Powerpoint.. 97. Using a gradient background *gasp* Their bulletin is printed in white bond paper, folded (manually) in three parts, most likely put together in MS Word. Attached with it is the church event calendar. Literally, a calendar designed with ClipArt images and 5 different fonts! There wasn’t a full band. Worship music is in the hymn book. Yup.. no Chris Tomlin here. But my gosh, the whole congregation was praising Him. And then I started hearing the still small Voice I’ve come to know.
