Everyone who knows me know there are only 2 sports I watch. One of them is basketball, specifically the NBA. I wasn’t really into basketball before I moved to Miami but I distinctly remember moving in ’06 and watching the Heat take the championship that year. I was partying with Shaq, Wade and the rest of them in downtown MIA when they had their championship parade. I’ve only watched Heat games for the most part and nearly died when they lost to the Mavs last year. Still hurts talking about it..
It was just last week when I start seeing Jeremy Lin on Facebook statuses everywhere. I mean, it’s cool to see Asian Americans in pro sports (represent!) but I thought he was just another Yao Ming. I happen to catch the Lakers-Knicks game last Saturday and that’s when I took notice. This guy can play.. and the way he played was just unselfish. He would give the ball to another player when the other player has more of a shot than him. He would do assists, crazy lay-ups and jumpshots from downtown. So that piqued my interest enough for me to Google him. Check this video out.
Here’s another interview where he says he wants to be a pastor someday – http://youtu.be/e9pqusyWt2w. You see, I’m not one to over-spiritualize things and promote stuff just because other Christians are into it. Jeremy Lin’s story reminded me that God uses people where they are at. He gives us talents and abilities and puts us through circumstances that may not make sense. But everything is part of the faith journey He has for you. I just think it’s super cool how this guy led his high school team to state victory but went undrafted out of highschool. He didn’t receive sports scholarships in college. He played for Harvard but was undrafted at the NBA. He played for the Golden State Warriors for a little bit before he was let go. And then seemingly out of nowhere, got picked up by the Knicks – one of the popular teams in the league.
This guy is fast becoming NBA’s Tebow. I hope that God keeps him in check and that he keeps his eyes on Him.
