On Being Single

My mornings consist of waking up on my couch (because my bedroom furniture is still on its way) and starting my day with my quiet time. People who know me know I’m not really a morning person. Well, in fact, not at all. But it’s not hard to wake up when I have this scene greeting me.

The book of the moment is 1 Corinthians and I was trudging through chapter 7 today. The chapter was talking about marriage and being single. Eversince I was a young girl, I never really thought about marriage. Not that I’m opposed to it, I think it’s a beautiful thing. Being in an all-girl Catholic private school up until highschool, my girl friends would be talking about their dream weddings, a white picket fenced house and the man of their dreams. I find myself strategizing about my career path, choosing my grad school, taking over Madison Avenue and eventually total world domination. Don’t even get me started with kids. I don’t want any. Not that I don’t like them, I just feel awkward around kids… BUT I’ve never met a kid who doesn’t like me. Funny how that works… LOL

Going back, verse 34 hit me in the face:

An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit.

This verse reminded me what singles should be doing with their time. This is a special time to have undivided attention in becoming what God called us to be. I could expound on this but I’ll let Jason Miller of Granger Community Church do so. I listen to a lot of podcasts from different churches and arguably this is the best message I’ve ever heard on singleness. The best quote from the message: “If we think about John the Baptist and Paul who are slightly heroic in the Scriptures, and maybe just maybe Jesus Himself who is also single, could we at least agree that the fact that you’re not married with kids does not make you a second class citizen in the kingdom of God?” A close second: “Some of you who have family and got single friends and you think there’s no way they would want to come over your house while you’re changing diapers dealing with the everyday mess of family life. Because you think your single friends have some cool hipster lifestyle. They’re going out to club openings every night. Listen, it’s South Bend, Indiana! There’s no hipster lifestyle. They’re watching Hulu at home every night.” LOL

Without further adieu, here it is. Enjoy!
