This is how I know God wants me to meditate on a verse – He will make it appear in the most random places. The verse of the moment had been haunting me the whole week. I’ve seen it on bathroom stalls (no joke) and desktop wall papers. I’ve heard it said on the radio and seen it as random tweets and Facebook status of people who don’t usually post Bible verses.
It goes a little something like this:
Call to Me and I will answer you and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know. ~ Jeremiah 33:3
As I began to meditate and let it seep in. My first thoughts were “Duh…” Well the verse is pretty straightforward. Also, He promised that all throughout the Bible.
– “He will call upon me and I will answer him” (Ps 91:15).
– “Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear. (Is 65: 24).
– “Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near.” (Is 55: 6)
– Even in Joel 2:32 “And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved”
And the list goes on…
Ever had to wait for an important phone call or text message? Suddenly, you become a slave to the notification light on your Blackberry or iPhone. Everywhere you go, you hear your text messaging alert sound or call ring tone. You have this anticipation mixed with frustration that builds up inside. The act of someone calling us, gives us a sense that we matter to the person. That the person is thinking about us. That we are important enough to be included in what’s happening to them.
God has so much in store for us if we only pick up that spiritual line and give Him a call. Notice that the verse Jeremiah 33:3 (and all the “call” verses for that matter) has a promise attached to them. He will answer. No straight to divine voicemail, no unread txt messages, no leave an IM in iMessage. He is ready and waiting to share with us everything He has in store if only we take the time to share what’s going on in our lives with Him. It could be the good, bad, borderline crappy or just plain whatever. God wants go through life with us, if we let Him.
So how do we start? Dial His number. We have access to the powerful Creator of the Universe and we’re too busy to use it. I’m talking about prayer. Take an inventory count of how many times you pray in the day. I’m guilty of this because when problems come, I get into “solution mode” by being completely overwhelmed and shutting down or just trying to shove the problem under the rug. But my friends, I’ve never seen anyone solve a problem by drinking it away. Sometimes, I let the busyness of daily life consume my time when time is so much better spent on prayer. Talk to Him. He will answer.
Then you can read His txt.. the Bible. Get in the Word. I’ve been a Christian my whole life and His Word never fails to surprise me with great insight. Even those chapters that I’ve read before take on a whole new meaning when I read them again. It is living. And it is written for us. Call it a divine love letter. It never fails and it would never return void.
So what are you waiting for? Go ahead. Pick up the phone and give Him a call.
