Just wanted to give you guys quick snapshots of one of the ministries I serve in. It’s my home church’s (University Baptist Church) young adult ministry we fondly call STYLE. It’s for college students and 20-somethings “devoted to Christ and committed to living out the Gospel in our city, through our lives.”
I got involved with it around 4 years ago when I volunteered to do media for Mosaic. Through the years and various name changes, it evolved into STYLE. I take care of the social media stuff (i.e. tweeting, status updates, announcement and just recently, blogging). I help with the set-up and occasionally do media when I’m asked.
I was tempted to call it “my ministry” in the first paragraph. Only until recently that God reminded me it was His. I was actually struggling with this a couple of weeks back. I’ve been thinking of things I can do to change it, bring more people in and give them more of an experience that will keep them coming back. Being a Type A, I can be a real task-oriented, control freak. I’m not naturally competitive with others but I’m extremely competitive with myself. I’m my worst critic and I beat myself up so much if I feel like I haven’t done my best. Yeah, it’s borderline self-destructive sometimes and people usually couldn’t tell the storm brewing underneath this petite, laid-back, smile-like-you-mean-it facade.
Going back, the more I rely on my capabilities, the more frustrated I got. It came to the point where I was getting really discouraged with people and with things not changing.. wondering if my tweets, status updates and announcements are even worth the effort. God reminded me during one of the Eikon sessions at Calvary Chapel. I realized it wasn’t up to me to question things or to make things happen. All I needed is to do what He asked of me – serve. And let Him take care of the rest.
So this is one area I’m plugged into. There are 2 other areas in UBC and I’d gladly show them to you guys. But for now, I think this will suffice. 🙂
